What is the difference between data being transmitted in a serial and parallel manner?

So basically data can be transmitted in two different manners from my understanding-serial and parallel.

Parallel sends multiple bits of data at a time

serial sends one bit of data at a time but at much higher speeds than parallel. in short serial is faster and better than parallel. USB (universal serial bus) cables are serial, SATA hard drives use serial cables
